Bavarian Road Safety Award 2026: Submit innovative projects now!

The Bavarian Road Safety Award 2026 has opened and is calling for innovative projects for safe leisure mobility to be submitted. Under the motto "Mobile together! Safely and calmly from A to B during your free time", the event promotes initiatives that strengthen road safety and environmental awareness in leisure activities. The prize is organized by the Versicherungskammer Foundation in collaboration with the Landesverkehrswacht Bayern e.V. Under the patronage of Joachim Herrmann, the Bavarian State Minister of the Interior, for Sport and Integration, outstanding projects that promote sustainable mobility are to be honored.

The projects submitted for the prize have diverse requirements. We are looking for sustainable mobility concepts such as bicycle rental and car sharing as well as measures that specifically support vulnerable groups such as pedestrians and cyclists. Campaigns to raise awareness of road safety and environmentally friendly leisure routes are also very important. Ideas to improve the transport structure in urban and rural areas are also welcome.

Important details and deadlines

A total of 5,000 euros in prize money is available, which can be divided between various initiatives. The award ceremony will take place on April 16, 2026 in the Herzogschloss Straubing. Participants have until February 28, 2026 to submit their applications. The winners will be announced in spring 2026. The jury is made up of representatives from the Versicherungskammer Stiftung, the Landesverkehrswacht Bayern e.V. and the Bavarian Ministry to select the best projects.

Since the Bavarian Road Safety Award was introduced in 1997, this award has been awarded in its current form since 2014. It focuses on the category “Mobile together!”, which honors the commitment to road safety and sustainable mobility. Important target groups are municipalities, tourism and sports associations, clubs and educational institutions that implement projects in Bavaria.

Sustainability and mobility in focus

In addition to promoting safety initiatives, the topic of sustainable mobility is also being given greater emphasis. Mobility is of central importance for participation, economic exchange and employment, but the transport system in Germany also causes considerable environmental pollution. According to the Federal Environment Agency, transport performance has increased significantly since 1960, while at the same time transport causes around a fifth of greenhouse gas emissions. In order to achieve the climate goals, the federal government has decided to significantly reduce emissions in the transport sector by 2030 and is aiming for greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045 in the medium term.

In order to achieve these goals, ambitious measures are necessary. These include shifting to more environmentally friendly modes of transport, increasing energy efficiency and using renewable energy. The aim is to design mobility in such a way that future generations can also enjoy environmentally friendly and safe transport without putting undue strain on the planet. An integrated approach that combines technological and non-technological measures is crucial to address the challenges in the transport sector.
