Althegnenberg secures the future: connection to the wastewater association decided!
The municipality of Althegnenberg has taken a significant step in wastewater disposal. On December 23, 2025, Mayor Rainer Spicker signed the contract to join the Obere Paar wastewater association in the Mering town hall. This important event took place in the presence of the mayors of Kissing, Merching and Schmiechen and marks a significant reform for wastewater treatment in the region.
By joining the Obere Paar wastewater association, Althegnenberg is responding to the challenges that arose from the outdated sewage treatment plant from the 1980s. This system has significantly too high nitrate levels and is no longer sustainable. The Munich Water Management Office had warned the community several times about nitrate overflows. The current wastewater treatment plant is unable to accommodate a larger receiving water, highlighting the urgency for change. The community had already tried to establish a connection in 2021, which has now been successfully implemented.
Impact and benefits of accession
By connecting to the wastewater association, Althegnenberg does not have to build its own new sewage treatment plant, which saves the community considerable costs. The financial outlay for the connection is 840,000 euros, which will be used to renew the sewerage system. These funds were obtained from an engineering firm's planned measures to check the lines in Mering St. Afra and Kissing. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with an expected connection in 2027.
Mayor Reinhard Gürtner from Kissing and Mayor Helmut Luichtl from Merching welcomed the inter-municipal cooperation and the planned laying of 80 percent of the pressure pipes on field paths in Merching. This measure not only shows the commitment of the municipalities involved, but also the desire for a respectful and environmentally friendly solution for wastewater disposal.
Technical background of wastewater disposal
The issues surrounding wastewater disposal are of great importance in Germany. According to the Federal Environment Agency, over 8,659 public sewage treatment plants treated more than 8.33 billion cubic meters of wastewater in 2022. The importance of biological purification becomes clear, as around 99.99% of wastewater is processed biologically. A pond treatment plant was also operated in Althegnenberg between 2019 and 2030, which is one of the oldest forms of wastewater treatment.
The Finsterbach, through which the purified water is discharged, is not only a receiving water, but also a habitat for various fish species. However, in recent years, water levels have decreased in summer, highlighting the need for modern wastewater treatment. The cooperation with the Obere Paar wastewater association aims to ensure technically and legally flawless wastewater disposal.
The upcoming changes in Althegnenberg show how important it is to respond to current ecological standards. The citizens of the community should be continuously informed about developments so that they can understand the background and advantages of this new solution. By connecting to the wastewater association, not only is an economical solution found, but also a contribution to environmentally friendly wastewater disposal.
Overall, this step creates a sustainable basis for future wastewater disposal in Althegnenberg, which brings both ecological and economic benefits.
