Traffic chaos on the town square: New routes to the Christmas market 2025!

On November 20, 2025, the city of Nuremberg will face significant traffic routing changes that will apply during the upcoming Christmas market. Aichach reports, that the changes to the town square will take effect once the market begins on November 24th and will last until December 30th. This means that traffic between the hospital church and the town hall will be closed throughout the entire period, including set-up and dismantling.

In the new traffic regulations, access to the Oberer Stadtplatz will be via the Obere Tor, with traffic now being routed through Koppoldstraße to Steubstraße, contrary to the previous regulations. This also means that the one-way street on Koppoldstrasse has been reversed, meaning that access from Schlossplatz and Steubstrasse to Oberen Stadtplatz is no longer possible. However, access via the Untere Tor and the Tandlmarkt remains unchanged. An additional focus is on the daily closures of access to the Tandlmarkt between December 1st and 24th from 4:30 p.m. to around 6 p.m. during the opening of the town hall Advent calendar.

Visitor flows and arrival information

The Nuremberg Christmas market attracts around two million visitors every year, which means that well-thought-out travel planning is essential. T-Online reports that the Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft (VAG) is increasing the frequency of the U1 subway line on Advent weekends. On Saturdays, the subways run twice as frequently between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m., while on Sundays they also offer increased frequency from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. However, the Lorenzkirche subway station, the closest to the Christkindlesmarkt location, will only be barrier-free to a limited extent due to renovation work.

Visitors must use the exits towards Königstrasse or Karolinenstrasse, as the exits to the Museum Bridge and Stangengäßchen at the Lorenzkirche subway station are closed. In addition, QR codes will be installed on the platform to show the fastest route to the Christmas market. Access to the market via bus lines such as 36 (main market), 37 and 46/47 (town hall) is also possible and recommended to avoid parking problems.

Mobility solutions and digital offers

To make the journey easier for visitors, VAG also offers digital solutions. With the NürnbergMOBIL app, users can not only request real-time information about departure and arrival times, but also book tickets for local transport, bicycles and e-scooters. Loud VAG blog Subscription holders can use these offers for free, with 600 free minutes available per month for the VAG_Rad and 15 free minutes for the Voi e-scooter. This supports sustainable travel, as many visitors use public transport instead of cars.

For further information, the city information center is available on 08251/9020 and the various mobility apps are available as helpful companions. This concentrated wealth of information and the improved traffic adjustments guarantee that both residents and market visitors can enjoy the pre-Christmas period in Nuremberg without any worries.
