Day of Civil Courage: Together against digital violence in Tirschenreuth

On September 19, 2024, the Day of Civil Courage will take place in Tirschenreuth, an important event that draws attention to the challenges of the digital world. According to a current survey by the Competence Network against Hate on the Internet, many Internet users feel restricted in their ability to express their opinions because they are afraid of digital violence. These findings are alarming and show that almost half of those surveyed have been insulted online. Josef Wittmann, the branch manager of the WEISSER RING in Weiden, emphasizes the need to make the Internet a safer place and to protect diversity of opinion.

“We can’t turn a blind eye to hate comments,” says Wittmann. "It is important that we stand up for those affected. Digital moral courage is just as important as analogue." This means that every individual should take responsibility to help others and take active action when it comes to digital violence.

Information stand in Tirschenreuth

As part of the Day of Civil Courage, the WEISSE RING will set up an information stand directly in front of the main entrance to Town Hall I in Tirschenreuth. The stand will open at 10 a.m. and will highlight the importance of civil courage in the digital space. The campaign is supported by the Waidhaus Federal Police as well as the Weiden Criminal Police Inspectorate and the Tirschenreuth Police Inspectorate.

The WEISSE RING is Germany's largest aid organization for crime victims and offers support through around 3,000 volunteer and professionally trained victim helpers in almost 400 branch offices. The Weiden/Neustadt/Tirschenreuth branch can be reached on 09602/9444707 to provide support to those affected by violence in emergency situations.

The event aims to raise awareness of digital violence and encourage people to take active action against such attacks. Participating in Civil Courage Day is an opportunity to find out about the challenges on the Internet and learn how to show civil courage.
