Microcensus 2024: Your voice counts – 50,000 surveys are pending!

By the end of the year, 50,000 citizens in Bavaria will be asked to take part in the microcensus. This survey is an important source of data on the economic and social situation of the population.

In Bavaria, as in the rest of Germany, the microcensus is carried out annually. Unlike a comprehensive census that takes place every ten years, the microcensus provides a regular survey that focuses on people's living and working conditions. So far, around 70,000 Bavarian citizens have already provided their information. A majority of respondents did this by telephone, while many also used the online option. Your participation is crucial in order to make political decisions based on solid data.

Important information about the survey

A total of 120,000 people in Bavaria are required to take part in the microcensus, which corresponds to around one percent of the population. The survey is the largest annual household survey in Germany and helps to understand the economic and social conditions of households. This data is essential to develop targeted policy measures, for example to combat poverty or to support families and pensioners.

The selection of households for the microcensus is carried out using a mathematical and statistical procedure. Volunteer survey officers visit the selected buildings and inform residents about their participation. These representatives are provided with an ID card that confirms their legitimacy. After contacting the households, they will receive a letter with detailed information about the survey and the options for participating, either by telephone or online. So far, around 70,000 of the 120,000 respondents have fulfilled their obligation to provide information, with the majority of answers being given by telephone.

Difference between microcensus and census

It is important to distinguish the microcensus from the census. The census, which is carried out every ten years, is a comprehensive survey that determines the official number of inhabitants. In the last census survey in 2022, around 13 percent of the population was surveyed. In contrast, the microcensus takes place annually and refers to a smaller, representative sample of the population. The data collected here is much more detailed and focuses on the economic and social situation of people.
