Waterfront strips: inspections in Zeitlarn, Wenzenbach and Tegernheim

The Regensburg Water Management Office is carrying out a Bavaria-wide project. It is called “waterside strip backdrop”. In this context, the smaller bodies of water in the communities are also recorded. From November 4th, 2024 to probably January 31st, 2025, employees of the water management office will inspect the waters in Zeitlarn, Wenzenbach and Tegernheim.

The importance of the waterfront strips

Waterfront strips play an important role in the cultural landscape. They connect landscapes and living spaces. During heavy rain events, they reduce the entry of nutrients and fine material from the arable land into the water. They also make an important contribution to the ecological condition of all water bodies in the district. The small upper reaches in particular have an important function. They can help improve the ecological status of larger rivers like the Rain.

Regulations for agriculture

Compliance with the waterfront strips is the responsibility of every farmer. These must generally be adhered to from the midwater line. In the case of bodies of water with a pronounced upper edge of the embankment, it is recommended to create the water edge strip from this edge.

Purpose of the water inspections

The inspections serve to create a current information base. This gives farmers guidance when it comes to observing the waterfront strips. The water management office plans to record the waterfront strip backdrop for the entire Regensburg district by December 31, 2025. The publication of the backdrop by the State Office for the Environment is expected to become legally binding from July 1, 2026.

Carrying out the inspections

The visits usually take place on foot. It is necessary to enter and/or drive on private and public paths and properties used for agricultural or forestry purposes. The authorization to carry out the inspections results from Section 101 Paragraph 1 WHG.
