Discover the hidden history: Children explore Regensburg's monuments
Regensburg (RL). On September 8th, the Open Monument Day took place under the motto “True Signs. Contemporary Witnesses to History”. This year the event was integrated into the Regensburg district's holiday program for the first time. Under the call "Join us! Discover your true sign", numerous children and young people went on an exciting journey of discovery that immersed them in the fascinating history of their homeland. They were accompanied by Dr. Thomas Feuerer, the district administrator, as well as Nadine Merk from the cultural department and Theresa Eberlein, who coordinated the project.
The event was the result of successful collaboration between municipal youth work and the district's departments for culture, local history and monument preservation. The aim was to familiarize the young participants with the diverse history and associated sights of the district.
Journey of discovery to historical sites
The tour took the children to four impressive monuments: the Loch castle ruins, the Jurastadel Pittmannsdorf, the Rieb telecommunications bunker and the Eichlberg pilgrimage church. The Loch castle ruins are a cave castle, a very rare type of building, of which there is only one other in Bavaria. The Jurastadel Pittmannsdorf particularly impressed the participants with its heavy roof, which weighs a whopping 90 tons - that's around 300 kilograms per square meter!
The communications bunker in Rieb is a remnant from a time not so long ago. It was built to maintain communications in the event of a nuclear attack and now serves as a memorial to the Cold War era. The crowning conclusion of the tour was the Eichlberg pilgrimage church, where the children were able to view the baroque roof structure and enjoy the breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape.
Join us! Discover your district
The “Join us! Discover your district” projects also include other activities such as the photo rally and the school project “Do you know where?” District Administrator Tanja Schweiger would like to give the students an understanding of the tasks and special features of the district. During the scavenger hunt with the Actionbound app “Discover your district office”, the young people not only learned about the diverse areas of responsibility, but also about the training careers in the district office.
