Remembrance Day in Altenthann: Commemoration with sadness and tradition
On Saturday, November 8th, 2025, Remembrance Day will be celebrated in Altenthann in a traditional manner. This memorial event is an important opportunity to remember the fallen soldiers of the world wars and the victims of tyranny. According to the announcement from altenthann.de, the evening service begins at 5:30 p.m. The hero honor will then be held at the war memorial at 6:30 p.m.
The community and KRV Altenthann invite the population and various clubs, including the volunteer fire departments from Mainsbauern and Adlmannstein, to take part in this event. The meeting point is at 5:00 p.m. at the village square, followed by a planned “march” around the village, although this is weather dependent. The Eucharist celebration at 5:30 p.m. is also dedicated to the fallen, missing and deceased of the two world wars.
Event details
After the service there will be tributes and speeches at the war memorial, again depending on weather conditions. If the weather is unfavorable, the ceremony will take place in the church. After the celebrations there is the opportunity to stop off at the DJK sports restaurant. The traditional meal “Palatinate” with cabbage is served there by landlady Daisy and her team. Pre-orders for food are required directly from the landlady.
Remembrance Day has a long tradition that dates back to 1919, when it was launched by the German War Graves Commission. This day has been celebrated in Germany since 1925 to remember the fallen and those affected by war. The first hour of remembrance took place in the Reichstag, and the first officially celebrated day of national mourning was on March 1, 1925, one day after the death of Reich President Friedrich Ebert. Wikipedia reports that the day of remembrance was moved to the penultimate Sunday before the first Advent in the 1950s and has been part of the German commemorative calendar ever since.
This New Year's Eve celebration has not only a local but also a historical context. There are similar commemorations in many countries. In the UK, Remembrance Day is celebrated on November 11th to remember those who died in the First World War, while in the USA, Memorial Day on the last Monday in May is dedicated to the surviving soldiers.
For the community of Altenthann, Remembrance Day is an important moment to pause together and remember those who lost their lives due to war and violence. Mayor Harald Herrmann issued the announcement about participation in the commemoration. The notice will be on display until November 10, 2025 to mobilize the population and remind people of the importance of commemoration.
