Experience mining history: Films and contemporary witnesses in Sulzbach-Rosenberg

On Sunday, September 8th, 2024, the large town hall in Sulzbach-Rosenberg will be the setting for a special evening that will bring the city's mining history to life. As part of the nationwide open monument day, which has been celebrated since 1993, the event will feature lectures, a panel discussion and film screenings. This year the event's motto is “True Signs: Witnesses to History,” which brings the importance of people's memories and experiences to the fore.

The event starts at 7:00 p.m. and shows films that were shot in Sulzbach-Rosenberg in 2020. These films not only offer a look at the region's industrial history, but also allow contemporary witnesses to speak and share their personal stories and experiences. The town's mining history is deeply rooted in the identity of its residents, as the Maxhütte employed around 80% of the workforce until the 1980s. The bankruptcy of the Maxhütte was a drastic event that had a lasting impact on the city.

Insights into the past

The evening opens with a lecture by city archivist Jörg Fischer, who sheds light on the historical background of the mining industry in the Upper Palatinate. Afterwards, Tanja Weiß, museum educator and city guide, will moderate a panel discussion with former Maxhütte employees and their families. This discussion will provide a platform to look at the formative events surrounding the Maxhütte and the Rohrwerk from a new perspective.

The event is organized by the cultural office of the city of Sulzbach-Rosenberg and is free of charge. However, due to limited space, you are requested to register in advance. Anyone interested can register by email at tourist-info@sulzbach-rosenberg.de or by phone at 09661-510 1172. In addition, numerous museums in Sulzbach-Rosenberg are open on Open Monument Day, giving visitors the opportunity to learn even more about the history of the city.
