Jannik Bohmann: Bavaria's beekeeper hero receives the Green Junior Angel!
On December 4, 2025, the “Green Junior Angel” prize was awarded in Regensburg. This year's winner, Jannik Bohmann from Sulzbach-Rosenberg, was recognized for his outstanding commitment to beekeeping. The honor was presented by Thorsten Glauber, the Bavarian Environment Minister. Walter Jonas, the district president of the Upper Palatinate, was also present and supported the award.
Jannik Bohmann was enthusiastic about beekeeping at a young age. According to stmuv.bayern.de, his career impressively shows how his passion for bees came about. He developed an interest in bees while still in elementary school, which led him to choose beekeeping as an elective. When he was just 10 years old, he expressed his desire to keep his own bees.
Outstanding achievements
In 2017, Bohmann took part in the “Beekeeping on Trial” project at the Sulzbach-Rosenberg beekeeping association and was quickly recognized as a valued member. At the age of 14, he took on the role of supervisor and trainer for other young beekeepers. In 2023 he won the Bavarian championship title for young beekeepers, and in 2024 he became German champion and was also able to achieve second place at the Young Beekeeping World Championship in Dubai. He is currently training to become an animal farmer specializing in beekeeping.
For Bohmann, the award is not only a personal honor, but also a recognition of his commitment to beekeeping. Honey bees are not only essential for food production, they are also the third most important farm animals after cattle and pigs. As deutscherimkerbund.de reports, a German bee colony produces an average of 20 to 30 kilograms of honey per year and requires an immense number of flower pollinations.
Importance of beekeeping
In Germany there are an estimated 143,000 beekeepers who look after around 964,000 bee colonies. The average honey consumption per capita is around one kilogram per year, which underlines the importance of beekeeping for German agriculture. Despite the high number of beekeepers, less than 1% practice beekeeping commercially, which shows that most of them do it out of passion and voluntary commitment.
City leader Stefan Frank congratulated Bohmann on the award and expressed his thanks for the young beekeeper's voluntary commitment. The “Green Junior Angel” award exemplifies the appreciation shown to those who are committed to the environment and beekeeping, and promotes awareness of the importance of beekeeping in society.
