Dancing against dementia: Flash mob delights Amberg and Sulzbach-Rosenberg!

On the occasion of the 6th Bavarian Dementia Week, several dance flash mobs will take place in the region in the coming days. These events, organized by the Bavarian State Office for Nursing and Health Regionplus Amberg / Amberg-Sulzbach, aim to raise awareness of dementia and at the same time promote health through exercise. The motto of the flash mobs is: “Dancing is training – also for our brain”.

The first two dates of the dance flash mob are planned for Friday, September 19, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at the market square in Amberg and for Monday, September 22, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Luitpoldplatz in Sulzbach-Rosenberg. Another event will take place on the same day at 3:00 p.m. at the St. Johannes Clinic in Auerbach. Participation is free and no prior registration is required. The choreography for the flash mob and an introduction are available online on the corresponding website. Access is via the password: Tanzflashmob2025. You can find more details here to the dance flash mobs.

Exercise as prevention

The Dementia Weeks not only offer dance flash mobs, but also an online event on Wednesday, September 24th, 2025, on the topic of “Sport and dance despite dementia”. This event will provide information and insights into exercise options that can contribute to the prevention and support of people with cognitive impairments. Registrations are under www.lfp.bayern.de/fachgespraeche possible.

The increasing aging of the population and the increasing number of cases of neurodegenerative diseases require innovative approaches to prevention. Scientists and therapists see dancing as a promising method to promote brain function and reduce the risk of dementia. Dancing activates multiple brain regions, activating memory, spatial perception and emotional centers. This positive effect is supported by brain neuroplasticity, which is promoted by regular physical activity such as dancing.

The four pillars of dance therapy

The benefits of dance therapy can be divided into four pillars:

  • Körperliche Aktivität: Sie verbessert die Durchblutung und stärkt das Herz-Kreislauf-System.
  • Kognitive Herausforderung: Tanzen erfordert Konzentration und fördert somit das Arbeitsgedächtnis.
  • Soziale Interaktion: Gemeinschaftstänze fördern den Kontakt zu anderen und reduzieren soziale Isolation.
  • Emotionaler Ausdruck: Musik und Bewegung wirken gefühlsfördernd und stressreduzierend.

Various dance forms also contribute to cognitive health in different ways. Ballroom dances strengthen spatial thinking, while creative dances stimulate creative thinking. The use of modern dance therapy programs that are specifically tailored to older people is also becoming increasingly important. These programs often start with simple movements to gradually introduce participants to more complex choreography.

In summary, although dance therapy is not a panacea for dementia, it could be a valuable part of health care in an aging society. It is all the more important that those affected and their relatives have access to information and offers in order to minimize the risks of cognitive impairments and maintain a good quality of life for as long as possible.
