Mering in transition: Citizens demand new commercial area and outdoor swimming pool solution!

On January 1, 2026, around 300 citizens gathered on the market square in Mering to celebrate the turn of the year together. The event, organized by the KK-Böllerschützen and the Kolpingkapelle Mering, was secured by the Mering fire department. Under the direction of Franz Eppeneder, the firecrackers welcomed the new year with an impressive quadruple salute. First Mayor Florian Mayer gave his fourth New Year's speech and thanked the market town council for their good decisions last year.

In his speech, Mayer reflected on his wishes for more peace in the world, which, however, did not come true in 2025. He also pointed out the decline in volunteers in the community and asked for new members for the KK riflemen. Klaus-Dieter Ruf from the Kolping Chapel took the opportunity to announce a jam-packed program of events for 2026.

Citizen wishes for 2026

In a discussion, citizens expressed specific wishes for the new year. Alexandra and Ludwig Ortlieb want down-to-earth politics and more togetherness in the community. Petra and Reinhard Strobel called for a return to an “old Mering” and expressed their concerns about the high rents that are causing problems for many residents. Sebastian Schaile discussed the need for a sustainable solution for the outdoor pool, while Marcus Pfanzelt called for the creation of a new commercial area to promote jobs.

Rosalie Ortlieb also expressed the desire for more events for young people, and Christine Maier, the senior representative, spoke out in favor of straightening the gutter on the market square in order to increase safety.

Important projects and review

Looking back on the past year, Mayer recalled the cold temperatures on New Year's Day 2024 and the significant temperature difference compared to the 17 degrees of the previous year. He also emphasized that important projects such as the completion of the new town center, the new town hall, the parking concept and the VgV tender for the outdoor swimming pool were pushed forward.

A new focus of discussion among Meringen residents is the desire for a new commercial area that would not only lead to the creation of jobs, but could also promote the economic stability of the community. The city administration is requested to take appropriate measures to take into account the needs of citizens.
