Mering market town council decides on important steps for flood protection!

On February 5, 2026, the Mering market town council met to make important decisions for the community. The meeting was opened by Mayor Florian Mayer at 8:55 p.m. 23 market town councilors were present at the event, supported by administrative staff consisting of Ms. Folgmann, Mr. Thanner, Mr. Lichtenstern and Ms. Lidl. Mr. Poser from ARGE Solidarity Flood Protection was also present.

The minutes of the previous meeting on October 30, 2025 were approved unanimously, indicating a high level of unity among local councilors. Another important point on the agenda was the awarding of the cleaning for the town hall and the sports hall, which is to be implemented in two lots.

Joining the ARGE Solidarity Flood Protection

A central topic of the meeting was the ARGE Solidarity Flood Protection, which was founded in the Pfaffenhofen district and consists of 23 member communities from three districts and two administrative districts. Chaired by District Administrator Albert Gürtner, the members discussed the conditions of accession, which would cost 15,300 euros for Mering, based on the population of 15,300. This ARGE has set itself the goal of establishing a real-time early warning system, which is supported by funding of 900,000 euros, as well as the development of a so-called “sponge region”, which is supported with a further 500,000 euros. Support for funding applications for flood protection, heat protection and climate adaptation was also highlighted. The market town council decided to join the ARGE in 2026 with a vote of 18:4.

Sewer renovation and demolition of the old sports hall

Another important item on the agenda was the discussion about trenchless sewer rehabilitation in Mering St. Afra. 7.3 km of main sewer pipes and 136 house connections were inspected. The need for action was classified as follows: 17% short-term, 36% medium-term, 32% long-term and 4% immediate. The costs for the renovation measures amount to 230,000 euros for the main sewer pipes and 104,000 euros for the house connections. The owners are responsible for the costs of the house connection lines. The market town council decided unanimously with a vote of 22:0 to put these measures out to tender and to authorize the building authority.

Finally, the demolition of the old sports center was also discussed, the property of which would be used to expand the Farbklekse daycare center. Although the demolition was already decided in 2012 and 2015, the administration recommended it again in order to avoid future costs for traffic safety measures. In a controversial discussion, the market town council decided by a vote of 10:10 to reject the demolition.

Yesterday's meeting of the market town council highlighted the current challenges and the decisions that are important for the future of the Mering community.
