Honorable memorial plaque in Mering: A sign of civil courage!
On February 11, 2026, the Mering market inaugurated a new memorial plaque at the town hall. This memorial plaque honors the courageous Meringer merchant Andreas Wunsch, who called for peaceful surrender on April 28, 1945. Tragically, he was killed by an SS special commando that same afternoon. The plaque not only commemorates the historical figure, but also the courage and moral courage that he embodied.
The initiative to install this memorial plaque came from the Junge Union Mering, which launched the project in collaboration with the CSU parliamentary group in the local council. The idea was developed by Maurizio Boehm and the then local chairman Patrick Wrba. The aim was to make Andreas Wunsch's courageous actions visible and to honor his moral courage.
A strong sign
The Junge Union Mering informed citizens about the project at an information event, and the response from the population was consistently positive. The First Mayor Florian Mayer and the parliamentary group leader Georg Resch supported the project, which aims to keep the memory of Andrea's wish alive.
The memorial plaque was ultimately developed and designed collaboratively. It has found a central place at the town hall, where it acts as a symbol against forgetting and for civil courage. The Junge Union Mering sees the board not only as a reminder, but also as an encouragement to act in similar situations.
This inscription on the town hall represents an important step towards preserving the legacy of Andreas Wunsch and reminding future generations of the importance of civil courage. This commitment makes it clear how local political initiatives can help strengthen the culture of remembrance and promote social values.
