Nabburg is committed to sustainability: street lighting is being converted to LED
A significant project to convert street lighting to modern LED technology has taken place in the city of Nabburg. A total of 158 lights were converted to energy-efficient LED technology, which not only protects the environment but also significantly reduces energy costs.
Before the conversion, the old lights consumed 44,412 kWh of electricity annually. After switching to the new LED lights, this consumption was reduced to just 14,105 kWh. This means a saving of 30,307 kWh per year and a reduction in CO2 emissions by 14.3 tonnes. These numbers show how important it is to switch to sustainable technologies.
Technical advantages of LED technology
The conventional light sources used previously, such as sodium vapor lamps, were not only energy inefficient, but also inaccurate in their light distribution. They often emitted the light in all directions, which meant that up to 50% of the brightness went in the wrong direction, i.e. into the residents' gardens. In addition, it was not possible to adjust the brightness during low-traffic times, which led to unnecessary energy consumption.
The new LED lights, on the other hand, use lenses and mirrors to direct the light specifically onto the streets. This not only reduces light pollution, but also improves visibility for drivers and pedestrians. A special function for night reduction ensures that the lights can further reduce their output late at night when there is hardly any traffic. This is particularly important to minimize impacts on wildlife, particularly insects.
Only high-quality lights that meet the funding conditions of the Federal Ministry for Environmental and Consumer Protection were selected for the conversion project. The conversion took place between August 23rd and November 24th, 2023 and was supported by various funding. The government of the Upper Palatinate and the Zukunft-Umwelt-Gesellschaft (ZUG) from Berlin have provided financial resources to realize this environmentally friendly project.
The National Climate Protection Initiative, which has been supporting numerous projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions since 2008, also contributed to this project. It supports a variety of measures, ranging from the development of long-term strategies to specific funding. This shows how important it is to support local initiatives that have a positive impact on the climate.
Overall, the retrofitting of street lighting in Nabburg represents an important step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly city. The combination of state-of-the-art technology and financial support from government authorities shows that climate protection is being actively promoted locally.
