“Yes, my, the panting!” You often hear these words from older people in Upper Palatinate. You complain of shortness of breath when climbing stairs or during light physical exertion. Many suspect that the lungs are the cause. But often there is something else behind it.
Detect heart failure
“In fact, there is often a ‘weak heart’ behind it,” explainsDr. Karim Kabir, head of cardiology at the Asklepios Clinic in the city triangle. He describes that in medical terms it is called heart failure. The heart can no longer handle the amount of blood it needs. The pressure in the pulmonary vessels increases, the blood is not sufficiently saturated with oxygen and shortness of breath occurs.
Experts estimate that up to four million people in Germany are affected. Over 40,000 people die from heart failure every year. With around 465,000 hospital admissions, it is one of the most common reasons for hospital stays.
