Waste tire collection in the Regensburg district: From 2026 it will be more expensive!
The collection of used tires in the Regensburg district will change fundamentally from June 30, 2026. At its meeting on September 17, 2024, the Environmental Committee decided to terminate the existing contract with the waste disposal companies Meindl and Pöppel. This decision aims to keep garbage fees for citizens stable in the long term and to create a fairer fee structure.
In 2023, a total of 530.56 tons of used tires were collected in the Regensburg district, which corresponds to around 66,000 tires. The costs for disposal amounted to around 227,840 euros. For comparison: In 2022, 492.1 tons were disposed of at a cost of 213,100 euros and in 2021 508.25 tons were disposed of for 216,748 euros. These figures show that collecting used tires is not only a logistical challenge, but also involves significant costs.
Reasons for the decision
The district administration has argued that the current collection of used tires is associated with high costs that arise from additional services. One problem is that the existing system offers loopholes that are exploited by citizens from neighboring districts and businesses. These people often leave their old tires in front of other people's properties shortly before the collection dates in order to take advantage of the free disposal in the Regensburg district. In many surrounding communities there is no comparable free disposal option, which leads to an additional burden on the district administration.
In order to meet these challenges, District Administrator Tanja Schweiger was authorized to terminate the contract with the waste disposal companies as soon as possible. This means that scrap tire collection will stop until June 30, 2026. The decision is part of a broader plan to optimize waste management in the county and reduce costs for citizens.
The discussion about waste tire disposal shows how important it is to find sustainable and cost-efficient solutions. The district administration will continue to work on a new concept to improve waste disposal in the Regensburg district and at the same time minimize the financial burden on citizens.
