The thorough renovation of the roadway on the A 93 between Regensburg-Süd and the Saalhaupt triangle began on December 2, 2025, at 6 p.m. Loud Thalmassing.de Traffic in the direction of Regensburg will initially be routed in one lane until the temporary crossing areas are completed. Previously, two night-time closures took place on November 30, 2025 to install three new gantries. The section of the A 93, which opened in 1984 with two lanes in each direction, needs major renovation due to damage to the concrete roadway that has been identified since 2021.
Extensive project phases
The project includes several phases: Preparatory work began in 2021 with median crossings and emergency parking bays. The following year the dam embankments were secured. In 2023, the western carriageway in the direction of Holledau/Munich was renewed, followed by drainage work and bridge renovations in 2024. This year, the eastern carriageway in the direction of Regensburg/Hof will be renewed.
A total of around 11 kilometers of road will be replaced. 50,000 cubic meters of concrete were removed and 120,000 cubic meters of material were used for the new road surface. The paved area totals 174,000 tons and 33 kilometers of crash barriers and 54 kilometers of road markings have been installed. In addition, 8 kilometers of drainage systems were renovated, meaning a total investment since 2021 of around 119 million euros.
Permanent changes in traffic flow
During construction, traffic will be routed via two narrowed lanes in both directions. After the main work is completed in December 2025, two normal-width lanes and one hard shoulder will be available in both directions. Rework and remaining services are expected to be carried out in 2026.
Another special feature of this project is that there will be no emergency call boxes in the first section of the motorway in southern Bavaria, as these will be dismantled. The next section, which concerns the route from Saalhaupt to Abensberg, is expected to be planned from 2027. The planned traffic routes will also affect the junctions and the Pentling fuel and rest area in the coming months, as shown on autobahnen-regensburg.de reported.

With a record sum of 169 billion euros by 2029, the nationwide transport network is to be maintained and specifically expanded.
