Digital monuments: MONUMENTA app makes history come alive!

On November 20, 2025, a meeting of the cultural committee took place under the leadership of District Administrator Tanja Schweiger, at which the focus was on the further development of the MONUMENTA web app. The aim of this initiative is to provide basic information on architectural monuments in the district and the city of Regensburg by May 2027. The planned content includes photos, short descriptions, profiles, timelines as well as literature and source information. By 2026, most of the content will be prepared and made accessible to the public, as Thalmassing reports.

The MONUMENTA web app was ceremonially activated on January 9, 2025, accompanied by State Minister Albert Füracker and other representatives. To date, content is available for 16 municipalities in the southern district, while processing for the eastern district began as planned in the first quarter of 2025. However, after the tragic accidental death of Prof. Peter Morsbach, who was responsible for developing the content, the project was interrupted. An approved moratorium from June 1 to October 31, 2025 has extended the project period by five months, so the new deadline now extends to May 31, 2027.

Integration of further monuments

An app was launched in January 2025 that includes around 260 monuments from the southern district. The rest of the district is expected to be integrated into the app by March 2026. Comprehensive content on the 1,200 architectural and archaeological monuments from the urban area is then planned. Lorenz Baibl from the city's Office for Cultural Heritage emphasizes that this accounts for a good half of the monuments represented in the app. The aim of the app is to make these monuments accessible to the general public and to focus attention on the districts outside the old town, according to Regensburg.

The digital platform aims to not only preserve the region's cultural heritage, but also use innovative technologies to make this possible. The use of 3D scanning, Building Information Modeling (BIM) and modern restoration methods has the potential to revolutionize more accurate recording, analysis and maintenance of historic buildings. According to the findings of Research and Knowledge, digital recording and modeling techniques play a crucial role in the preservation of architectural monuments.

The further development of the MONUMENTA app also focuses on modern technologies that help to precisely recreate damaged or missing components or to optimize the efficiency of restorations. Innovative solutions that combine energy efficiency and monument protection are of great importance for the sustainable development of historical buildings. The comprehensive documentation aims to not only preserve the region's cultural wealth, but also to make it visible.
