Major construction site A 93: Traffic restrictions are imminent from March 2025!
A comprehensive infrastructure project begins with a thorough renewal of the roadway on the A 93 between the Regensburg-Süd junction and the Saalhaupt triangle, which is expected to last until December 2025. The work will officially start at the beginning of April 2025, and significant traffic restrictions can be expected from mid-March, as road users will be redirected to just one lane in the direction of Regensburg. This reports schierling.de.
The entire line, which has been in operation since 1984, suffers from damage that requires ongoing repairs. The area between Regensburg-Süd and the Saalhaupt triangle is a total of 11 kilometers long. The need for extensive renovation is made clear by the renewal of the old concrete roadway, which is being replaced by the construction of a new asphalt roadway. This also includes the demolition of the existing road surface up to a depth of 1.50 meters and the renewal of drainage pipes.
Extensive traffic restrictions
The preparatory work that has been ongoing since 2021 formed the basis for the planned main work, which already took place in 2023 on the carriageway to Munich and Holledau. From April 2025, traffic will be transferred in both directions to the roadway that was renovated in 2023, which could particularly lead to a risk of traffic jams in front of the Saalhaupt triangle. Private motorists are asked to stay on the motorway instead of taking diversions, as the traffic routing there cannot be changed for specific destinations or vehicle license plates, such as autobahn.de highlights.
The restrictions begin with a reduction in lanes both in the direction of Regensburg and Munich. From March 19, 2025, two lanes in the direction of Munich will be narrowed, while in the opposite direction, towards Regensburg, from March 23, 2025, only one lane will be available. Traffic will be limited to three lanes in total, which is expected to last until the end of 2025.
Background and long-term perspectives
This extensive road construction is part of a larger trend in Germany, where many roads are in need of renovation. Especially after the collapse of the Carola Bridge in Dresden in 2024, the federal government decided on a renovation package worth around 500 billion euros, which will also flow into the expansion of the federal highway network. Within this framework, investments amounting to around 8.8 billion euros were made in German highways in 2024 statista.com reported.
The renewal and maintenance of highways is an ongoing task, the necessity of which is also reflected in the population's dissatisfaction with the condition of the roads. According to a survey, in 2025, more than half of respondents were dissatisfied with the condition of their roads, as evidenced by frequent road damage such as potholes and cracks in the asphalt.
The project website www.a93-fahrbahnerneuerung.de continuously provides up-to-date information about the upcoming work and the associated traffic restrictions, which are summarized in the fact sheet. Despite the challenges and restrictions, the transport authorities hope that the extensive work on the A 93 will lead to a lasting improvement in the transport infrastructure.
