Rails renewed: Noise expectations for Sünching and Mangolding!
Deutsche Bahn (DB) has announced extensive rail renewals in the Sünching – Mangolding section. The work will be carried out by DB InfraGO AG and is planned for the period from September 29th to October 3rd, 2025. During this time, noisy activities are to be expected, including at night and on weekends, which could pose challenges, especially for residents. An automatic warning system is used for the safety of employees in order to minimize possible dangers during work. Since the work falls under Section 7 Paragraph 1 Sentence 2 of the 32nd BImSchV, no special approval is required for night-time operations, and the bans on Sunday and public holiday work do not apply to Deutsche Bahn in accordance with Article 2 Paragraph 3 No. 1 FTG.
Residents should be prepared for possible noise disturbances throughout the construction period. However, DB InfraGO AG has introduced the option of contacting the responsible authority to clarify concerns. This measure is part of a larger plan to modernize the DB's infrastructure, with more than 2,000 kilometers of tracks, 2,000 switches and 150 bridges to be renewed by 2030. The total scope of the investment program amounts to around 16.4 billion euros, which will be financed from funds from the DB, the federal government and the states, as trans.info reports.
Comprehensive renovations to the rail network
As part of the renovation measures, Deutsche Bahn also plans to renovate a total of 40 high-performance corridors by 2030. The orders for these renovations have already begun, with the first renovation starting on July 15, 2024 on the Riedbahn between Frankfurt am Main and Mannheim. Philipp Nagl, head of DB InfraGO, has made it clear that 2024 should be a year in which the aging of the railway infrastructure is stopped.
In order to effectively reroute rail traffic, it will be necessary to modernize these diversion routes in advance. Particularly noteworthy is the planned relocation of a signal in Recklinghausen Ost to make room for 740 meter long freight trains. In addition, around 40 percent of the total of 355 small and medium-sized measures to improve quality in the existing network should have been implemented by the end of 2025.
Noise protection measures and environmental friendliness
Another aspect of the construction projects is environmental protection. Deutsche Bahn is pursuing a concept that focuses on both noise reduction for residents and urban development compatibility. As part of the noise abatement funding guideline, elaborately designed noise barriers can be funded, especially in areas relevant to tourism. The aim is to meet the requirements for the appearance of the surrounding area and to promote the acceptance of construction projects. Modern and visually appealing noise barriers are also being built in new stops between Lübeck and Fehmarn, which represent an important measure in the area of noise prevention, as nachhaltigkeit.deutschebahn.com explains.
