Microcensus 2024: Bavaria's households in the focus of statistics
The microcensus, a comprehensive household survey that is carried out annually, has been running in Bavaria since January 2024. This survey is the largest of its kind in Germany and plays a crucial role in collecting data that is important for political decisions. The information collected through the microcensus affects all citizens and helps to paint a clear picture of living and working conditions in the region.
Around 120,000 people from around 60,000 randomly selected households were selected for the microcensus. This representative sample is intended to ensure that the results apply to the entire population of Bavaria. Around 70,000 people have already taken part in the survey and around 50,000 more people will be contacted by the end of the year. Participation takes place either through a telephone interview or via an online survey, with the invited households receiving a written request from the Bavarian State Office for Statistics.
Legal basis and data protection
The implementation of the microcensus is based on the Microcensus Act (MZG). This law requires those selected to participate to ensure the accuracy of the results. There is no way to exempt yourself from the obligation to provide information. Data protection has the highest priority: all data collected is treated with strict confidentiality and used exclusively for statistical purposes. This means that no personal information will be passed on to third parties.
In order to carry out the survey efficiently, specially trained survey officers are deployed. These specialists are carefully selected and trained by the State Statistics Office to ensure that the surveys are carried out professionally and respectfully. Participation in the microcensus is important not only for statistics, but also for shaping future policies that can impact citizens' lives.
