Noise remediation in Sünching: Nights full of construction noise are looming!

DB InfraGO AG is planning noise-intensive work in the Sünching-Mangolding section between December 8th and 11th, 2025. During this time, significant noise pollution is to be expected, which can also occur at night and on weekends. The municipality of Sünching informs that no permit for night and weekend work is required for this work, as it involves measures on federal railway tracks. There is also no requirement for approval for work on Sundays and public holidays. The aim of the initiative is to minimize noise pollution as much as possible and to thank residents for their understanding.

The rail renewals are part of a comprehensive initiative to reduce noise in rail traffic, which was already addressed in advance by the city of Plattling. An automatic warning system is used during work to ensure the safety of employees, which is required by the employers' liability insurance association. According to DB InfraGO AG, attempts are being made to keep the disruption to residents as low as possible. There are several contact persons available to answer any questions, including Simon Maier from DB InfraGO AG.

Ways to reduce noise

In order to reduce noise in rail traffic, there are different legal bases, which are anchored in the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG) and the Traffic Noise Control Ordinance (16th BImSchV). The legal framework provides for various immission limits in dB(A), which vary depending on the use of adjacent buildings. These include:

  • Krankenhäuser und Schulen: Tag 57 dB(A); Nacht 47 dB(A)
  • Reine/allgemeine Wohngebiete: Tag 59 dB(A); Nacht 49 dB(A)
  • Kern-, Dorf- und Mischgebiete: Tag 64 dB(A); Nacht 54 dB(A)
  • Gewerbegebiete: Tag 69 dB(A); Nacht 59 dB(A)

Active noise prevention includes measures such as the construction of soundproof walls and the installation of soundproof windows in affected residential areas. On existing railway lines, noise abatement is carried out as part of a voluntary federal program. Since 1999, over 2.1 billion euros have been invested in stationary noise protection measures, which have been implemented on more than 2,300 kilometers of railway line.

The planned work between Sünching and Mangolding illustrates the challenges in the area of noise reduction. Further legal regulations, for example, enable the construction of noise barriers without extensive planning legal procedures, which accelerates the implementation of protective measures. Since 2015, the trigger values for noise reduction have been significantly reduced, which has increased the total number of routes in need of renovation to around 8,500 kilometers.

With these measures, DB InfraGO AG aims to sustainably reduce noise pollution from rail traffic. This is a continuous process that is carried out with responsibility for the residents and under federal and state legal requirements.
