Together for nature: One million orchard trees by 2035!

There is a rich variety of habitats in Bavaria, and orchards are at the top of the list. These special areas are not only home to numerous animal and plant species, but also an important part of our cultural landscape. Unfortunately, populations have declined sharply in recent decades, which is alarming because up to 5,000 species rely on these habitats.

To counteract this worrying development, the Bavarian state government, together with various partners, including the municipality of Weiherhammer, launched the Bavarian Orchard Pact. The goal is to plant a million new orchard fruit trees by 2035 and thus promote biodiversity.

How you can help

The “Scattered fruit for everyone!” initiative invites all citizens to become active. The state government supports the purchase of tall, bare-root fruit trees with up to 45 euros per tree. This means that the cost of the plants themselves is greatly reduced. Only the expenses for planting, such as tie posts and protective measures, have to be borne by the participants. It is important to note that tree planting requires a long-term commitment as the trees should remain standing for at least 12 years.

What types of fruit can be planted? The selection is diverse and ranges from pome fruits such as apples and pears to stone fruits such as plums and cherries to walnuts and quinces. Wild fruits such as bird cherry and mountain ash are also welcome. However, there are some exceptions: certain apple and pear varieties as well as trees planted for commercial purposes are not eligible.
