Fruit presses in Rettenbach: Fresh juice from local apples
The time of autumn not only brings colorful leaves, but also the opportunity to turn fresh fruit into delicious juice. This year, the Rettenbach Fruit and Horticultural Association (OGV) has once again taken up the cause of operating the fruit press in Kastell-Windsor. The fruit press attendant Konrad Weinzierl has made the preparations and is looking forward to accepting the registrations from Regina Eichmeier. The trees are full of apples waiting to be processed, while some fruits are already on the ground or rotting. So it's high time to have the apples pressed into juice!
There is a good harvest of apples in the region, while the situation for pears and quinces looks less encouraging. There are also large numbers of grapes hanging on the vines, waiting to be harvested. In order to make the juice, it is important that the fruit delivered is washed beforehand. It is then put into the fruit mill, where it is processed into a mushy mass, the so-called mash. This is then distributed in layers in special cloths on the press, and the golden yellow juice flows into containers provided, which the participants should bring with them.
Details about the fruit press
The first pressing will take place on Saturday, September 7, 2024, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The press will then be opened every 14 days. Those interested should keep an eye on the announcements in the local newspaper and on Facebook so as not to miss any appointments. In order to preserve the juice, OGV Rettenbach offers the practical “Bag in Box” system, which enables easy storage.
Anyone who would like to take part must register in advance. Registration can be done by telephone at 09484/423. It is advisable to bring enough transport containers with you, as around 30 liters of juice can be obtained from one hundredweight of fruit. The anticipation of fresh, homemade juice is great, and the members of the OGV Rettenbach are looking forward to continuing the tradition of fruit pressing.
