Theater magic in the country inn: The Bavarian Protectulus” is coming!

On October 9, 2025, the Theaterfreunde Süß e.V. announces the performance of the play “The Bavarian Protectulus”. The performance takes place in the country inn “Rouherer” in Süß. The author of the piece is Peter Landstorfer, who delves deep into the tradition of Bavarian folk theater with this comedy. The main characters are portrayed by a talented ensemble, including Gustl, played by Thomas Fenk, and his friends Bartl (Patrick Masek) and Vroni (Sabrina Meier).

The plot revolves around the two friends Gustl and Bartl, who indulge their passion for playing cards at the Jagerwirt. But Gustl's careless game leads to an annoying loss: he loses two oxen to the cattle dealer Greimoserin. In order not to disappoint his wife Vroni, Gustl decides to sell the Oberanger to the woman from Greimos without telling her about the previous loss. But the honest Blasius (Jonas Graf) reveals the secret, and Vroni ultimately has to decide for himself what should happen.

Folk play tradition

“The Bavarian Protectulus” joins the long tradition of the folk play, a theater genre that is characterized not only by its entertaining content, but also by a deeper socially critical component. The folk play was originally created between 1780 and 1850 to portray the desire for justice and the rebellion against injustice. This form of theater brings characters and stories from everyday life to the stage and is often performed in dialect. The tradition of the folk play is closely linked to the classic peasant theater tradition and village comedies, which often employ comic characters and an educational goal in order to provide both education and entertainment to the audience.

The performance “The Bavarian Protectulus” promises not only fun and excitement, but also an insight into the rich and diverse history of the Bavarian folk theater, which has thrilled audiences and critics for centuries. Information about other pieces by the author Peter Landstorfer can be found on the Wilhelm Köhler Verlag website, where other works in the field of folk plays and comedy are also listed. The piece “The Bavarian Protectulus” is therefore a successful homage to a form of entertainment that is deeply rooted in Bavarian culture.
