Climate walk in Mering: Heat protection for our older citizens!
On October 27th, 2025, the city of Mering invites you to a special climate walk, which begins on October 29th at 2:00 p.m. at the market square. The walk is aimed particularly at older people and is led by district manager Dr. Alexander Jungmann and environmental officer Petra von Thienen organized. The aim of the event is to address the effects of climate change, such as heat, drought and heavy rain, while at the same time exploring effective protective measures against extreme heat. Participants are invited to contribute their local knowledge and advice on heat-affected areas as well as indoor and outdoor climates.
The event will be held barrier-free to enable the greatest possible participation. In view of the increasing risks for vulnerable groups, especially older people, as a result of climate change, it is important to work together to develop solutions. A recent UN report highlights that climate change poses a particular threat to older people as they are more sensitive to extreme weather conditions reports science.ORF.at.
Goal of the climate walk
The main intention of the climate walk is to explore the community of Mering from the perspective of climate adaptation. Participants have the opportunity to actively participate and exchange ideas on how to ensure the quality of life and safety of older people in times of climate change. It is particularly recommended to pay attention to local heat islands and discuss appropriate measures to counteract the challenges of climate impacts.
Information for those interested
In addition to information about local conditions, participants are asked to identify specific areas in Mering that are particularly stressful in hot weather. Such suggestions are of great importance with regard to future planning and construction measures. The UNO report once again illustrates the urgency of such initiatives and points out that individual measures must also be taken to improve climate protection. Citizens' commitment to climate protection is crucial.
For more information on this topic and its impact on society, you can visit the Climate Adaptation Report consult, which offers important information for the implementation of protective measures. With this walk, the city of Mering is setting an example for sustainable development and raising awareness in dealing with the challenges of climate change.
