Local heating network in Adelzhausen: progress and citizen participation required!

On December 1, 2025, Renergiewerke Adelzhausen announced current progress in the expansion of the local heating network. Information about the current status and future plans was provided comprehensively. However, the most recent interest survey in the southeast and southwest areas showed little interest in a connection, which motivated those responsible to call on citizens to actively participate. It is recommended that you get in touch during December in order to be included in further planning.

Several streets are affected by the plans, including Hauptstrasse, Amselweg, Drosselweg, Raiffeisenstrasse, Flurstrasse and Waldstrasse. While the north construction section has already successfully connected the school and kindergarten, all transfer stations have been installed in the east construction section, so that five households are already being supplied with heat. The next construction phase, the western part of the network, is scheduled to begin in spring 2026, with the exact implementation depending on the weather.

Technical details of the heat supply

The on-site heating center plays a key role in the heat supply. A wood chip plant supplies 63% of the heat required from local wood chips. This is supplemented by a combined heat and power plant (CHP), which covers 33% of the heat requirement. A peak load boiler also ensures that 4% of the heat requirement can be covered during peak times. If demand is very high, a gas boiler is used to ensure a continuous supply of heat.

Fine dust emissions must be taken into account in wood chip heating systems, but modern particle separators can significantly reduce these emissions. The wood chips come from residues from the forestry and wood processing industries, which increases their sustainability. Compared to other fuels, wood chips are significantly cheaper and enable almost CO₂-neutral combustion. Further information about the efficiency of wood chip heating is available on the Viessmann website. [Viessmann]

Another example of the use of local heating networks can be found in Adelsdorf, where experience with wood chip systems has been gained for years. A wood chip heating system was installed there, which initially supplied community facilities and over time expanded to include other customers. Approximately three years after commissioning, the facility was upgraded to better manage energy demand and increase efficiency. Continuous adjustment to the room temperature requirements was also part of the measures. [Energy Atlas Bavaria]
